For over 40 years, the guitar has been a wonderful rewarding and challenging friend. I am fascinated by the instrument and have spent everyday of my life trying to understand more about this stringed wonder. My guitar experience has included playing in groups, doing session work, composing and teaching. In 1996, I released my first solo CD "West of Everything. To hear compositions from this CD, please visit my audio clips page. Currently, I am working on a duets with my long time playing partner, guitarist Kevin Smith. The new music will be a collection of guitar duets we've written over the past 10 years. As a teacher, I've spent the last 25 years teaching guitar techniques that incorporate jazz, blues, rock, classical, Celtic, and Brazilian styles. Over the years, I've collected my musical thoughts into a series of articles — some of which I have posted here. My inspiration comes from the great teachers, players and students I’ve been associated with, as well as my personal musical heroes whom I’ve learned so much from just by listening. I hope the ideas expressed in the articles below will help other guitarists forge ahead and find new things to play that the rest of us can learn from. Articles on the art of playing the guitar
I intend to change this page often and update it with new links and ideas for the thinking guitarist. Links to Guitarists' web sites: The following is a partial list of some of the guitarists I admire. If you haven’t heard some of them, I suggest you give them a listen — no matter what style you play. I have deliberately left many players off the list, mostly because they were so obvious it seemed unnecessary to list them. Other players, while obvious, are so important I didn’t feel a little reminder would hurt anyone. Where I could, I’ve add a web link to the player’s name. Jazz: Rock/Blues/Other Fingerstyle Classical I apologize if any of the above links are broken or removed. I don't have any control over other web sites! If you find a bad link, and have the time, please me e-mail and I’ll update or remove the link. |
